Luncheon, MCI tour, & Leadership Conference

Thanks to all who were able to attend the luncheon at Ryan’s on September 1st.  The food was good, but the real attraction is always getting together to share memories.  This year it was a little different, in that MCI staff members were present to record some of those memories.

As mentioned previously, MCI has been working on properly documenting its history.  There have been efforts to do this under the watchful gaze of each Warden, but Warden Bunting has turned this into an organizational mission.  In addition to the numerous photos and documents collected over the years, the oral history of the institution has become the focus.

Each of us has unique stories and experiences, like those shared at our informal gatherings.   MCI is working on documenting those to add detail and meaning to the photos and newspaper clippings.  This effort started with the MCI cookout in July, and is intended to be an ongoing project.  If you are interested in participating, contact either one of us, or Kathy Hamilton (740-382-5781, ext. 2210).

We have two future events to mention that might catch your fancy.

The first to come up on the calendar is MCI’s open house, scheduled for Sunday, September 20.  Billed as the MCI Family, Friends, & Retirees Tour Day, it is an opportunity to go through the facility.  Many current employees take advantage of this opportunity to show friends and relatives where they work.  For us, it is an opportunity to see what they’ve done with the place since we last walked the hallways.  There is no cost, and refreshments are provided.  Below should be a copy of the poster they provided for the event.

The second item is a little narrower in scope.  On Friday, November 13th MCI will again be hosting a Men’s Leadership Conference.  Although not all details are finalized at this time, one significant one is:  the featured guest speaker will be Mr. Art Tate.  Many of us will recall Mr. Tate from his stints in Central Office, and as Warden of Chillicothe Correctional Institution.  To others, he is best known as the Warden of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility during the riot of 1993.  We have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Tate many times over the years, and are pleased he accepted this invitation to speak.

That’s what we know for now.  If we don’t see you on the 20th, we’ll see you at MCI for the free lunch on October 7.

*********************************************************************************************************

We have an update on the cookout for the MCI retirees.
Please take a moment to check out the letter we will be mailing and emailing our members

*********************************************************************************************************

Dear Fellow Retiree,

Marion Correctional Institution has invited the retirees to a cookout, to be held off-site later this month, and which includes spouses and significant others.  Scheduled for Wednesday, July 22nd from 4-7pm, it will be held at the FOP Park outside of Caledonia.  Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided, along with plates, napkins, and forks.  There is no cost involved to attend, only that you bring a covered dish and your own beverages.  The dress code is casual – after all, this is a summer picnic held in a park.  If you are able to make it, just let Kathy Hamilton know at 740-382-5781, extension 2210, by July 21st.  A copy of the poster is included as an attachment.

The reasons behind this cookout focus on Warden Bunting’s desire to recognize and preserve MCI’s history.  Many of you have already obtained or viewed copies of MCI’s 60th Anniversary book and DVD produced by PNN.  It has considerable information about the creation and early years of the institution.

Each of us knows or has heard stories that add context to events from MCI’s past.  This cookout provides an opportunity to share and preserve our stories and observations with MCI’s current leadership.  From the numerous luncheons and informal meetings over the years, it is obvious the stories are out there.  Warden Bunting wants to preserve those moments and memories before the opportunity slips away.  Think of it this way, how many of us have said either during or after our employment,
“No one ever asked me, but if they did I’d tell them …”.

This is your chance.

MCI will have video equipment available to document your thoughts and impressions of your time working at MCI.  After we eat, we’d like you to consider sharing your stories.  Kathy Hamilton and John Mathew will coordinate the recording sessions.  Below is a list of suggested topics, but you might have others important to you – not a problem!

For those who can’t attend the cookout but would like to participate, just let Kathy Hamilton know at the above number.  She can schedule a session in PNN for the next retiree’s lunch, August 5th, or another day and time that is convenient.

We’ll see you on the 22nd!

Charles Daniel, President
John Mathew, Secretary

Sample Topic Areas:

1.         When did you work at MCI?
2.         What positions did you hold at MCI?
3.         Describe how you became interested in working at MCI.
4.         Describe your impressions entering the institution the first time.
5.         What did your family, friends, spouse (significant other) think about this?
6.         Why did you stay?
7.         What are three (3) events that stand out from your time at MCI?
8.         Knowing what you know now, if you could tell your “new hire” self something about working at MCI, what would that be?
9.         Knowing what you know now, if you could tell your “new hire” self something about retirement, what would that be?
 10.       In what areas do you feel you made a positive difference at MCI?
 11.       What do you miss the most about working at MCI?
