Thanks to all who were able
to attend the luncheon at Ryan’s on September 1st. The food was good, but the real attraction is
always getting together to share memories.
This year it was a little different, in that MCI staff members were
present to record some of those memories.
As mentioned previously, MCI
has been working on properly documenting its history. There have been efforts to do this under the
watchful gaze of each Warden, but Warden Bunting has turned this into an
organizational mission. In addition to
the numerous photos and documents collected over the years, the oral history of
the institution has become the focus.
Each of us has unique
stories and experiences, like those shared at our informal gatherings. MCI is working on documenting those to add
detail and meaning to the photos and newspaper clippings. This effort started with the MCI cookout in
July, and is intended to be an ongoing project.
If you are interested in participating, contact either one of us, or
Kathy Hamilton (740-382-5781, ext. 2210).
We have two future events to
mention that might catch your fancy.
The first to come up on the
calendar is MCI’s open house, scheduled for Sunday, September 20. Billed as the MCI Family, Friends, &
Retirees Tour Day, it is an opportunity to go through the facility. Many current employees take advantage of this
opportunity to show friends and relatives where they work. For us, it is an opportunity to see what
they’ve done with the place since we last walked the hallways. There is no cost, and refreshments are
provided. Below should be a copy of the
poster they provided for the event.
The second item is a little narrower
in scope. On Friday, November 13th
MCI will again be hosting a Men’s Leadership Conference. Although not all details are finalized at
this time, one significant one is: the
featured guest speaker will be Mr. Art Tate.
Many of us will recall Mr. Tate from his stints in Central Office, and
as Warden of Chillicothe Correctional Institution. To others, he is best known as the Warden of
the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility during the riot of 1993. We have had the pleasure of working with Mr.
Tate many times over the years, and are pleased he accepted this invitation to speak.
That’s what we know for
now. If we don’t see you on the 20th,
we’ll see you at MCI for the free lunch on October 7.
