Greetings.
This is to announce two things that were probably obvious.
1 – The MCI retirees WILL
NOT be holding a gathering this April or May.
Based on the initial reports concerning the Corona virus,
it was anticipated we might still be able to hold a gathering this spring. With the extension of the “stay at home”
situation and closing of dine-in restaurants, that just doesn’t seem feasible
at this time. Added with the
recommendations for those in special groups, like advanced age and existing
health issues, this was not a difficult decision.
We anticipate that by this fall the Corona virus will be
in our rear view mirror, and we will be able to hold a gathering. Our web site will be updated accordingly, as
soon as the situation permits. If you
know of retirees who don’t have email or check our web site, please relay this
on to them.
2 – Free meals at MCI for retirees the first Wednesday each
month are suspended until further notice.
Several years ago, when Warden Jason Bunting approved for
retirees to enter MCI for a free lunch on the first Wednesday each month, it
was understood that future circumstances at the institution might alter that
arrangement. Most of us thought we had a
handle on what those circumstances might be, but the Corona virus added to the
list.
On March 10th DRC issued an order restricting entry for
those not considered essential to the mission of the Department. That was the initial pause in permitting
retirees into the institution. Since
that time an unidentified MCI staff member reportedly come down with the Corona
virus, and the institution is now considered under quarantine. (We don’t have
access to any inside information on the situation, just what has appeared in
the media.)
Obviously, this circumstance will improve over time. What no one knows is what time frame will be
required. When MCI provides definitive information
on this, we will post it on the web site, and send it out as an email as soon
as possible.
Until the time that all of this has calmed down, we have
some recommendations:
- Take care of yourself.
- Keep updated on the Corona virus situation in your
locality.
- Pay attention to advice and direction from medical
professionals like Dr. Acton (ODH Director), Dr. Fauci (NIAID Director), or
your personal physician.
