PETE PERINI

Pete Perini, past Superintendent of the Marion Correctional Institution, passed away on September 11, 2008, at the age of 80. Pete was born on February 10, 1928. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather. I knew him as my boss, mentor and friend.

He was a graduate of the Ohio State University and served in the Army in Korea. A wrestling champion in high school, he went on to excel in baseball and football at Ohio State. He is member of the OSU Sports Hall of Fame. He played baseball for the Boston Braves and football for the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears. After his professional sports career, he worked at the Ohio Penitentiary. After demonstrating his management skills in the recreation department, he moved to other jobs within the correctional community. His last assignment was that of Superintendent at the Marion Correctional Institution.

Those of you who worked for Pete know that his sports experience was the basis of his management style. He was a team builder. Pete was a man who worked hard and succeeded in everything he attempted. He cared about his employees and genuinely enjoyed working with them. I learned something new every single day that I worked with Pete.

I will miss him.

Luncheon on 9-2-08

It was great to see everyone again. For those who were weren't able to attend, don't worry - we'll do it again next year in May. Mark your calendars now! May 5, 2009, at noon. We intend to meet at Ryan's, but as they don't make reservations that far in advance we'll have to confirm that later.

Three topics that arose during lunch were our email address, our web page, and addresses of retirees.

The email address is mcira43302@yahoo.com. Any information, questions, photos, etc., that you want to communicate can be sent here. Both John Mathew and myself check this account regularly

Our web page can be found at: http://mciretireesassociation.blogspot.com/ - after all, you're reading it now! The photos we collected can be found here, along with information about our group. We also have links to PERS and the Deferred Compensation web sites, as well as to the DRC web site for Marion Correctional Institution. If you haven't checked their site recently, it has been completely redesigned. Among its new features is a short video tour of the institution.

Addresses can be frustrating to track down for friends and relatives, and especially so for retirees, whom we only see a couple times per year. At our last two luncheons we have added and corrected many listings, but still received postcards returned marked "unable to forward". If you can help with these addresses, we'd appreciate it. Cards returned were for Mark and Linda Stevens, Ervin Davis, Harvey Bell, and Robert Patterson. At the luncheon we received a lead on Robert Patterson's address, but would appreciate help with the others.

That's all we have at this time. Thanks to all those who attended, and those who plan to come the next time.

Robert Ferguson, President
